OUR HISTORY
Intersection
Intersection was a non-profit agency, operating in downtown McKeesport by the Sisters of Mercy. They served from 1973 until the end of 2024. They gave 50+ years of love and service in McKeesport! They served individuals and families, including children of all ages, at their main building at 115 7th Street in downtown McKeesport, a building that once was home to Free Hungarian Reformed Church. With loving care, the Sisters of Mercy, their staff and volunteers provided many services, including meals, a food pantry, and a resource support program, as they faithfully served those in need. In 2024, the Sisters of Mercy decided to close their work but also to offer their building, their connections and some seed money to another Christ-centered agency who shared their values and mission. They chose as their successor the former 9th Street Community Kitchen

9th Street Community Kitchen
9th Street Community Kitchen began in McKeesport in 2016, establishing 501(c)(3) status in 2022. We served alongside the 9th Street Clinic in McKeesport, a free primary care medical clinic for patients without health insurance. In August 2022, a gas line explosion destroyed the prior home for the Clinic and the 9th Street Community Kitchen in an old YWCA building. The 9th Street Clinic has a new home on Fifth Avenue in McKeesport.

Hope Ministries of McKeesport
The 9th Street Community Kitchen has a new address at 115 7th Street in downtown McKeesport and it has a new name: Hope Ministries of McKeesport. (We changed our name from The 9th Street Community Kitchen because we felt the name no longer reflected our expanding ministry and we wanted to boldly proclaim Hope as our principal motivation for service.) Before moving to the Intersection Building in January 2025, Hope Ministries temporarily operated at the Lighthouse City Church on Shaw Avenue in McKeesport, serving a weekly dinner to people of all ages who were hungry and seeking fellowship.
Hope Ministries of McKeesport wants each of our guests to know that he/she has dignity and worth and we want to support our Neighbors by providing nutritious meals and snacks and by demonstrating to them best practices as to preparing and serving healthy foods. We also offer a Food Pantry, Bible studies, resource support program to help them in their journey; and fellowship with their Neighbors.
